Adult Water Safety
Adult Water Safety
Everyone who is near water is at risk of unintentional drowning, although children are the most vulnerable. Whatever your age, being able to survive in the water and understand the principles of it could save your life or enable you to help save someone else. You also set an example for kids and those around you when you learn about and abide by water safety regulations!

Water Competency
What is it and Why is it Important?
Being water competent refers to the ability to recognize, prevent, and overcome typical drowning scenarios. More than half of adult responders to a recent Red Cross poll were unable to perform the water competency abilities required to save their own lives, putting them at a high danger of drowning.
How do you tell if you are capable of saving yourself? A person is deemed "water competent" if they are able to execute the following abilities:
-
Tread or float for a minute
-
Turn around in the water and try to escape
-
Climb out of a pool without using a ladder
-
Swim a length of the pool without pausing
-
Jump into the deep end and surface to breathe
